My boyfriend and I were searching for games to play on our PS4 on a Saturday night when we stumbled upon while True: learn(). A coding game? We were intrigued, but skeptical. It was only $12.99, so we made the decision to purchase it and ended up spending hours fighting over the controller.

It seems that everyone nowadays is either starting a startup or working for one. The appeal of starting your own company is high: whose dream job ISN’T banking millions on an innovative product and managing their own company, instead of being managed by one?

Of course, startups are much harder than most people are willing to work for, but that doesn’t stop millions of recent grads and college students from attempting at the next big thing.

I decided to take on the task of learning German over the summer. Duolingo is one of the most notable mobile apps for language learning. As wonderful and fun as it is, mobile learning, in general, lacks many aspects a traditional classroom can offer. Duolingo provides plenty of language practices, but nothing compares to a real life conversation.

Note: This case study was down in the fall of 2018. Since then, Duolingo Clubs has went through various transformations, and finally, phased out in 2019.

Problems with Duolingo Clubs

Duolingo’s “Clubs” feature allows users to converse with other users through posts and comments. While several of my test users had attempted to use it, they never thought about adopting the feature as part of their routine. …
